Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD) - $40.00/sample

BLAD is a simple recessive gene defect found in the Holstein Breed. A mutation in the CD18 gene causes a malfunction. A sticky substance normally found on the surface of leukocytes, which is essential to its ability to function, is reduced in animals that carry the gene defect. Those inheriting two copies, homozygous state, die shortly after birth because they do not have the ability to fight minor infections. Animals that inherit only one copy of the defect appear normal.
